Katerina's journey: Cancer Survivor to Eco Thriver

I am a mother, wife, sister, daughter, neighbor, friend, and steward of the earth.  I am energized by nourishing foods, cooking, the salt air, nature, hiking, photography, taking action to protect our planet, yoga and learning about all things healing and holistic.  I am a young breast cancer survivor, BRCA mutation carrier and have mold sensitivity and multiple chemical sensitivity (mcs, or environmental illness). Eating to nourish, making small batch non toxic products, and limiting toxins from my life started as a choice and is now a necessity. I believe we are borrowing this earth from our grandchildren and it must be taken care of through limiting pollution and our carbon footprint.  I am a N.J. native and I currently reside with my husband and two children in Carrboro, North Carolina.

My eco journey began with my breast cancer diagnosis at age 32. After a bilateral mastectomy, 5 months of chemo, 6 months of a trial drug, and surgical menopause, I began to research (and research) how I could reduce my risk of recurrence and how I could keep my children from getting the disease that also took my mother's life when I was 20. I threw myself into healthy whole food organic cooking, using food as medicine and nourishment. I couldn't control cancer, but I could control what I ate and what chemicals I allowed into my home. What I learned was the healthier I ate, and the less chemicals I was exposed to the better I felt, the less impact I had on our planet and my passion was fueled!

Three years ago I had cavities filled with mercury fillings and that is the event that sparked my chemical sensitivity. After a house renovation my sensitivities have advanced and so have my reactions. Staying healthy and sane in our toxic world is difficult, but I believe doable. I work daily at educating myself, controlling what I can, and trying to let go of the rest.

It is my hope to help supply truly non toxic products, help others make more sustainable choices and to help others on their own journey towards health, nourishment, and living a non toxic lifestyle!

Much health, love and light,

Christina's Journey: Previvor to Eco Thriver

I first began my journey with all things holistic after my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. I remember wanting to help her anyway I could. For me that was to delve into nutrition books and other ways to complement the harsh chemo and surgery she received.

I started with the bookstore and read about food, natural medicines, and disease. I was hooked on a path of well being and learning more about the healing powers of food and integrative medicine.

This led me to acupuncture school where I learned much about the body, nutrition, the environment, mind, and most importantly focusing on the root cause of disease, instead of just treating symptoms.

Years later after losing my mother to metastatic breast cancer, I endured my sister’s diagnosis, BRCA testing (yes I am a carrier), prophylactic surgeries, my other sister’s cancer diagnosis, and living with the aftermath of surgery on my body.

I am invigorated by the mountains, hiking, the ocean, nourishing foods, working with children, sharing my knowledge with others, and learning more each day.
